Artist's Bio and Statement

American painter Eden Compton was born in Texas and raised in Connecticut. Eden and her NZ born husband, Richard, have settled in upstate New York after two decades of sailing and managing private charter boats in the Caribbean and throughout the US. Eden has a permanent studio and gallery in the Beekman Street Arts district of Saratoga Springs.

"My landscape work is an attempt to synthesize memory painting based on observation and is more tonalist in nature. Most of my landscapes begin with sketches and drawings done on location. They are completed in the studio where I exploring visual expressions of poetic concepts rather than literal interpretations of a scene."

"My approach to cityscapes is similar but I am more interested inn the narrative possibilities of a street scene. It is fascinating to me that an arrangement of buildings in a certain light can communicate the mood and soul of a neighborhood. I like to explore that idea inn my urban paintings."

her forma art education began with a BA inn Art History from Colgate University and independent courses at the International Center for Photography in NYC. She has studied with many nationally recognized painters in workshops and classes. Eden's award winning work has been included in national juried shows including the Catherine Lorillard Society, Salmagundi Art Club, Hudson Valley Art Association and the International Pastel Society as well as numerous regional and local shows. She is a juried member of the Degas Pastel Society, Oil Painters of America, Portrait Society of American and an Associate with Distinction of the American Women Artists Association.
